ABOUT GEMMA SISIA
At tatu we love creativity, passion, storytelling and people who think. So to kick start 2010 we bring you an inspiring speaker who encapsulates all these elements - Gemma Sisia, an amazing young woman who built a school and transformed lives.
You may have watched Australian Story and heard about Gemma and The School of St Jude. The only girl in a family of eight children, Gemma set off to Africa at 22 years of age, with the passion and zeal inherited from her ancestor, Edmund Rice (founder of the Christian Brothers movement), to volunteer and teach.
Her journey all began with a gift - the gift of energy in mobilising goodwill from around the world, the gift of passion and belief that all children deserve a high quality education, and the gift of $5 a month from family and friends who pledged support. From humble beginnings in 2002, The School of St Jude has grown from three students and one teacher to a vibrant learning community of more than 1300 sponsored children across three campuses.
The highly regarded academic program also provides employment to over 350 local Tanzanian staff including three sets of local Headmasters and their academic teams who now run each school. In 2007 Gemma’s achievements were honoured by an Order of Australia medal.
We're confident that no matter who you are, Gemma's story will inspire and motivate.
Fighting poverty through education, The School of St Jude is a non-profit organisation enjoying continuing success only because of dedicated and generous supporters. Proceeds from the event will go towards furthering the great work being carried out by Gemma and her hard working team.
